Across the Pond Concert - Saturday 9th July 2011

What the Press said

A full house at Thomas Alleyne’s High School thoroughly enjoyed a musical journey across the Atlantic to savour the musical heritage of The United States.  From Spirituals to Barn Dances, from Jazz to Musicals to Pop, Conductor Wendy Scott led the fifty strong choir in presenting “a flavour of some of the uplifting, foot-tapping, heart-wrenching music from ‘Across the Pond”

The tone was set with a Cocktail Hour (Marchington Mayhem being an absolute winner!) after which the Singers processed into the theatre singing their own original version of The Battle Hymn of the Republic.  The pace picked up with Steal Away, Shenandoah, Rutter’s arrangement of Black Sheep, Copland’s hilarious I Bought Me a Cat and Chilcott’s Buffalo Gals.

Show stoppers, Themba and Laura Mvula then captured the audience with the first of two twenty minute spots. These well known Midlands performers, (singing with the internationally renowned  Ex Cathedra and Black Voices –the UK’s foremost a cappella Gospel group ), brought the house down time and again with their beautiful, melodious voices  and their magnetic personalities.

From Bridge over Troubled Water to California Dreamin’, from Standin’ on the Corner to Chattanooga Choo Choo and Moon River the evening ended with a rousing medley of songs from Loesser’s Broadway show Guys and Dolls.

The Mayor of East Staffordshire, Cllr. Patricia Ackroyd – who attended with the Mayor and Mayoress of Uttoxeter – gave a warm  vote of thanks to all performers for producing a stunning evening’s entertainment.

What the audience thought

“We enjoyed every moment and particularly the very warm, friendly welcome we received on arrival, the decoration of the hall (it really put us in the right frame of mind), the cocktails (what a great idea and they were delicious too), the whole well-put together programme and the professionalism of the choir - very impressive! We LOVED Laura & Themba. What a find!   The Marchington Singers are a great bunch and always make us feel at home. Please thank them. Congratulations!  We'll be back!!” - Carol & Brian from Chester.

“Thank you for a marvellous evening.  Laura and Themba were a fabulous addition to the proceedings!  - Mike & Marion.

What the soloists thought

“It was a real pleasure for us to perform in the concert and we felt so warmly appreciated by both audience and choir.   We really enjoyed the choir's performance - they sang with a joy that was quite irresistible and we found ourselves really connecting with what they sang. Love and best wishes.”   - Themba & Laura Mvula.

What the Singers thought

“That was a great concert and thanks to everyone involved in organising the drinks, wine, nibbles etc. they started the evening off really well.  Thanks also to Rhoda for her superb accompaniment!”   - Maggie.

“A terrific concert and well worth all the effort and rehearsing!  A cheering, different and exhilarating choice of music!  Well done for choosing Laura and Themba to join us.”  - Sheila.

“Many thanks for once again giving everyone of us such another unforgettable occasion.  This has gone on now for 26 years and it just gets better! Wow! “  - Ian.
